I visited Hodgenville, Kentucky--the birthplace of Abraham Lincoln. The first Lincoln Memorial building (1911) is located at that site. The Memorial Building features 16 windows, 16 rosettes on the ceiling and 16 fence poles--representing Lincoln being the 16th President of the United States. The 56 steps leading up to the building entrance represent his age at his death.
Inside the Memorial Building is a log cabin. For years, it was believed that this cabin was the actual cabin where Lincoln was born. In recent years, science took some of the fun out of this by proving that the wood from this cabin is dated from a time just after Lincoln was born.
