Midwest's Largest Bicycle Sculpture

February 22, 2016  •  2 Comments

One of the advantage of a road trip is seeing unusual and unexpected "attractions" along the road. While driving from Custer to Deadwood during my road trip through South Dakota, I noticed a large pile of bikes to the left of the road in the small town of Pringle, South Dakota. I was in no hurry, so I pulled over to take a closer look.

There was a sign in front of what looked like a pile of junk that read:

"Midwest's Largest Bicycle Sculpture...And Possibly the World"

My guess is that this claim is probably true. It's the first bicycle sculpture that I've ever come across.

I started taking pictures of the sculpture and ended up staying for quite a while. I switched back and forth between a wide angle and telephoto lens in hope of capturing a variety of images. The light was constantly changing. Most of the time the lighting was very dull. At times I was shooting in a light rain. Some light broke through the clouds every so often.

Hi Allen,

That's very interesting. I didn't know that there were other such sculptures. I didn't know about this one in South Dakota until I suddenly came across it while driving by. I found it to be a fascinating photography subject. Glenn

Hello Glenn - I passed this bicycle structure/sculpture on my way to Mt. Rushmore in 2018. I didn't want to stop for photos at the time. But the next day I drove back to it. I was intrigued with imagination that put this thing together. When I posted my photo to my group they thought it was a pile of junk and didn't qualify as Art. A couple of days ago I was watching an educational channel and they were doing a special on the top 10 Parkways in the U.S. The were doing the OVERTON PARK in Austin, Texas. The narrator passed under a Arched Gateway over the walkway and it was covered with bikes. This structure had a bit more color in it. I was amazed to see that there many are other bicycle structures around the U.S. You can see them on what google titled as " bicycle structures". I enjoyed looking at you photos my are about the same. I'm just a hobby photographer looking for the unusual view.
