One of my favorite things about photography is how the camera can "see" things that we can't see with the human eye. By slowing the shutter speed, we can portray motion in the frame. I recently captured this photograph of moving traffic on the Stevenson Expressway from the Willow Springs Road overpass using a relatively slow shutter speed (1/2 second).

It can be challenging to obtain slow shutter speeds in bright daylight conditions. Unless appropriate compensations are made, the photograph will end up being too bright (overexposed). For this image, I used the following steps:

• Lowered the ISO setting to the camera's base ISO of 100
• Narrowed the aperture to f/20
• Attached a variable neutral density filter (set to 8 stops)
• Attached a polarizing filter to reduce the light by another 1 1/2 stops
• Secured the camera to a tripod to minimize camera movement
