A Whole New World

It doesn't always require traveling to amazing locations to capture photographs. Sometimes, interesting images can be created from inside your home!

One of my favorite subjects to photograph is oil and water. I'm always surprised at the abstract scenes that develop when viewing oil floating in water.

Oil and water abstract To create this picture, I first filled a glass pie plate with warm water. Then, I poured a small amount of vegetable oil into the water. To add color, I placed the plate on a sheet of wrapping paper. Finally, I lit the scene with an ordinary desk lamp.

I used the Nikon D700 along with a macro lens (Nikon 105VR). As always, I secured the camera to a tripod--which allowed me to use a very slow shutter speed (1/4th second), base ISO (200) and a wide depth of field (f/11).
