Ordinarily, I don't accept photo assignments...and I generally don't do portraits. But, yesterday I agreed to take some photos of a ten year old hockey player. He happened to be at the local fitness center (the Sportsplex in Orland Park). I decided that the pictures would be better if I brought some lighting gear. So, I brought the following items into the facility:

• One Einstein strobe
• 24" Lastolite Ezybox (small softbox)
• 5x7' Collapsible Background
• Lightstand

To my surprise, it took me very little time to set up. Within a few minutes, I positioned the boy in front of the backdrop and started shooting. Here are a few images from this brief session:

For these portraits, I positioned the light subject left at about 45 degrees. I placed the subject in an area with some window light to the right for my fill. The backdrop was placed about three feet behind the subject. That's all there was to it!

I also own a portable battery that provides power to the strobe--so I don't even need to be near an electrical outlet. This portable studio can be set up at anywhere!
